Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess breast tissue and skin. Breast reduction makes the breast more proportional to the rest of the body. The areola (pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) may be reduced and repositioned as part of the surgery.

Goals:
  1. To regain body proportion
  2. To improve discomfort of neck, back, and shoulders due to excess breast weight
  3. To regain a slimmer clothed appearance and improved fit of clothes
  4. To regain freedom to enjoy physical activity
Candidates:
  1. Women with neck, back, or shoulder pain caused by weight of the breasts
  2. Women with heavy, sagging breasts
  3. Women with breasts that are out of proportion with the overall body frame
Typical Recovery:
  1. Patient will be placed in a foam-tape bra to wear for two days for light support
  2. Sutures removal will occur at seven days
  3. Return to reasonably normal activity in seven to fourteen days
  4. Breast shape will settle to normal position in eight to twelve weeks
