Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess breast tissue and skin. Breast reduction makes the breast more proportional to the rest of the body. The areola (pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) may be reduced and repositioned as part of the surgery.

Typical Desired Outcomes:

  1. Better proportional look.
  2. Better clothed appearance and improved fit of clothes.
  3. Greater freedom to enjoy physical activity.
Best Candidates:
  1. Those with back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of the breasts.
  2. Those with heavy, sagging breasts with very low nipples and areola.
  3. Those with breasts that are larger and out of proportion with the overall body frame.
Typical Recovery Timeframe:
  1. Bandages of soft gauze covered by light foam tape to support the breast and reduce swelling may be removed about 2 days after surgery.
  2. Sutures will be removed 5 to 7 days after surgery.
  3. Patient will return to normal activity in 7 to 14 days.
  4. Breast position will settle to normal position in four to six weeks.
